Fatface Night Air World Freestyle Champs 08 The weather forecast wasn't promising but still there was a good turnout, throughout the day riders battled with high winds to try and make the most of the fantastic jumps Bugs Boarding had provided. Despite several showers qualifying got up and running about half two, the jumps kept in good shape thanks to the massive effort to cover the entire run in plastic sheeting whenever the heavens opened. With a decent crowd of onlookers it all kicked off as the 60 competitors tried their best to impress the judges with various lines available on the new world freestyle jumps of Bugs Boarding. Some of the highlights included a fantastic run from Renny Myles hitting the massive drop, backflipping the second table to 360 on the final step up, beautiful laid out flips from Jed Hornyold and Sam Nicholas in addition to the painfully stylish front flips of Tom Reid. Sadly though, after the second qualifiers, the weather eventually caught up with us and the rain seemed to have set in for the day, although they managed to squeeze in the third qualifying runs it was clear that the world freestyle championships which everyone at Bugs Boarding and Fat Face had worked so hard for was to be a washout. Luckily the qualifiers gave results which could be used to crown a new world freestyle champion, an honour which went to Mick Kirkman in the U14s, Jos Kirkman in the Ladies, John Burton in the Masters, Ben Rye in the U18s and Renny Myles being crowned THE world freestyle champion. Big thanks to everyone who helped this happen, and hopefully next year it can go off in true style... in the dry. Words by Jack Beezer and Photos by Theo Acworth. |
