POW! Mountainboard Jam in The Lakes

CreamTeas2010_R3

Saturday the 18th September was the date for the final round of The BFC's Cream Teas & Jam series, a comp that puts the emphasis on fun & smiles :) Dan Wilson brings us an alternative photo-diary of the capers that occured that weekend at Surf the Turf in Kendal, The Lake District, Cumbria....

So we hit the road early, it's a long drive up to the Lakes from darn sarf. We kept entertained with kick-ass choonz, drooling at the scenery, and mutating jelly-babies. With hindsight, the migrating birds should have warned us of the inclement weather...

Arriving at Surf the Turf you wouldn't even know at first that the centre was there, hidden by corn & chickens. However, just past them is the lovely spot where wheeled-magic happens. We made the meets & greets while peeps were busy; warming up, bustling about the cabin (a cleverly extended army truck, complete with flowers in hanging-baskets made from helmets), and finishing off the new skate ramp.
There were lots of local riders, loads of groms, and some new converts too, as well as The BFC's own Martyn James & Dave Compton to 'host' proceedings. We set up in the camping field (that you reached by driving over the bx track!) and soon enough it was time to begin... And keep your eyes peeled for those fantastical friends that dropped by!

Dave welcomed all the entrants and laid down the law: just have fun. With 3 zones to cover, everyone got stuck in to the mini-ramps, rails, and the ubiquitous barrell. Martyn thought he wouldn't air it: the (3rd) shot below was his first attempt! Ryan Reynolds followed, then all kinds of havoc was wreaked...

Encouraging those who hadn't done it before, the hosts got busy with the boardslides. Quite a few riders got the confidence to give it a go and did really well, winning some of the first spot-prizes!

There were some sweet taps and bonks on the barrel, a load of front & backside boardslides, manuals & MJ's, and more general jibbery creativeness. There had of course been quite a few spills as riders tried new things, but it was nothing serious, just funny, and encouraged everyone even more!

It had started raining after an hour so everyone finished off their fun and headed back for a break, to vote, and to shelter...

The rain passed by so without too much dilly-dallying the chaps all moved on... A few bits n bobs were shifted around to create a mini-ramp to wallride and then zone 2 was on, also featuring the three northshore drops, the (s, m or l) freestyle jumps, and quarter to finish.

There were courageous drops (MJ beasting it, Jacob Cox tweaking it), sweet grabs, pterodactyls, all manner of rotations (Amon Shaw bs 3's, DC fs5 to headache, JoeD showing why he's an MBS pro rider with flawless 7's), ufo's, the odd flip and some nice rock n roll's and stalled disasters etc on the coping-free Q (esp RR & Tony Newsome showing major style)!

As Joe D again swapped his board for his camera another zone was just about complete, so a short break for some energy drinks, playing on the slackline, and skating the newly-completed mini-ramp...

Riders cast their second zone votes and then pushed on to the last zone, the seven deadly sisters!
Everyone had to descend the 7 heavily-banked berms in the quickest & funnest way, as The BFC encouraged chants, songs and sound effects to add an extra smiley dimension to proceedings... As you look at the pics imagine the Birdie song, Macarena, National anthem, whoops & hollers galore! Everyone did their best with extra props to Mr. Newbie for adding his own 'nyeeeeooowwwmmm' sound effects as he ran (yes, ran) the course and commiserations to Ieuan Jehu for ripping the A out of his purple tights! lots of lol-ing went on, that's for shiz...

With the main comp's shenanigans drawing to a close, there was a mass descent down to cast the final votes & escape the giant robots...

So with unicorns all shooed away and ghosts busted, all that remained was the results & prizegiving!
Most fun went to newcomer Campbell who got stuck in all day, Best Bail went to Cam Bailey who spent the day pushing himself and stacking it hard every now and again! Best trick went to Toney Newsome with his fakie rocks on the quarter pipe.
In the juniors, Jacob Cox earned a well deserved first place after riding super steezy all day and keeping up with riders almost three times his age! Second went to Chris Martin who put in a solid performance and third was claimed by Patrick Sharkey; Three local riders who showed everybody that the Lake District is home to some promising talent.
Not so local rider Ieuan Jehu showed the oldies how to rock it and won the masters meaning that he won the overall masters category this year and won a snazzy old-skool Dangerous Brothers sweatshirt & original rem artwork.
The main category saw some amazing riding with young gun Amon Shaw taking third, Ryan Roberts styling his way to second place but it was MBS Europe pro rider Joe Dickson who went for the hat trick and won his third Cream Teas and Jam event in a row and therefore claiming the crown of undisputed Cream Teas and Jam 2010 Champion of the Galaxy! Boom!
The MBS Europe Junior Jammer prize for the best junior performance of the CT&J series went to Amon Shaw who killed it and won the junior category at Knockhill and took third in the open at Surf the Turf. Amon’s sick skills now see him with a brand new MBS pro 95 and a place on the MBS team where he joins the likes of Joe Dickson and Tom Kirkman, good work Amon!
Markus & Surf the Turf were also awarded a special remolicious prize for being such amazing hosts! Thanks guys :)

So with winners rocking badass shades and The BFC & junior winners doing cheesy interviews for regional tv, the fun was wrapping up. A few carried on boarding to make the most of being at this great spot, the barby was fired up and the rain started coming down properly. With the hopes of a Maize maze riot dwindling, everyone got settled in for an evenings banter dans le tents, accompanied by single malt, micro-guitars and human didgeridoo. All except lovely Dave Compton who needed the sleep after his headbanger 5 earlier on. zzzzzzzzzz

Sunday arrived with a smorgasboard of muddy wetness and it was clear not much more wheelieboarding was going to happen... Packing up and trying to leave became a hilarious challenge in itself, as vehicles made epic fails getting out and up the slope, with more sliding than the not-worlds. Luckily a helpful Landy rocked up to tow & winch everyone to the top of the hill, so thanks to them, and to Surf the Turf for a great weekend. Thanks too to The BFC, MBS Europe, ATBsports & Boardology, as well as all the riders for making it funner than fun :)
And that was it for another year of Jammy goodness. I'll leave you with a quote from Joe Dickson when asked how it felt to be overall King of the Jam...
"errrm, what was that all about then?!"
