Q & A sesh with tops MEBA rider

garybowman

Q: when did you start riding?

A: I started riding in 2004 when I used to ride for Kite 'n' Skate. Back in the day.

Q: what got you interested?

A: Well I used to Skateboard and was out skating at Yate Bowls with Steve Holdsworth aka Wiggy and some guy came along to use his mountainboard on the dirt jumps behind the park, so me and Wiggy went over and showed some interest an also asked if we could have ago. Well within half an hour we were better on his board then he was and two days later I had my own mountainboard which was a Ground Industries deck with F3 bindings, cahnnel trucks, Rockstars hubs and T1 tyres. Thats how I came to meet Alan Greenhill a Kite 'n' Skate in Dursley.

Q: What's been your most favourite memory from your time mountainboarding?

A: My most favourite time mountainboarding has got to be riding for Out To Grass and working the centre with Zane in 2006, also coming 2nd in the Open Freestyle and 10th in the Elite Boarder X, that was a nice suprise, although I do think that its going to take a while to get back up to that standard again.

Q: What did you think when you found out your face had been put on a sticker?

A: Ummm thats a wierd one, I never knew that I had been chosen to be on the sticker until a couple thousand of them turned up on the Out To Grass door step and were destributed to the whole mountainboard comunity. Also what a Crap Trick I was pulling it didn't even look like anything in fact I think it was a really screwed up Palm Air, why they never used Tom Read doing a backflip or James Slay I'll never know.

Q: Was it an easy desion to take a break/stop riding?

Remolition Says- 'We heard a rumour that you sold everything to run off to america to work in a theatre.....'

A: Yes I did, you heard correct. I sold all my stuff for £300 can't remember the guys name but if you read this come say hi this season thats if my board didnt sacre you off. Anyway yeah I went to work in NYC as a Lighting Designer for three months and no it was not a very easy desion to make, I missed the whole season last year and never saw one event but then I did meet my girl friend in NYC and it was the best decision I've ever made carreer wise.

Q: Have you been riding anything while you have been away?

A: No, nothing. I was going to give Snowboarding ago but then desided against it. It was hard to do anything recreational when I was off as I was so busy all the time with NYC, a national tour and moving to London, but hey now I can.

Q: What did you miss most in everthing while you have been away?

A: Got to be the english accent especially when I was in NYC after three months the american accent does your nut also the mountainboarding atmosphere and the people.

Q: What has made you get back on a board?

A: Three words 'My Boy Wiggy', LOL sorry he asked me to put that in there. I always wanted to be on a board when I was away it was just my carreer was more important at the time and now that it has settled back down again Ive got a lot more time to do things that I enjoy, not that I dont enjoy my job. Also its great to be back out riding with all the old MEBA Crew, who I will most definatley be riding for this season. I think me and the MEBA boys knew I would go back to the roots at some point.

Q: Plans for the up coming season?

A: Yeah a few, like I say I will be riding for MEBA this season and plan to ride in the OPEN both in Freestyle and Boarder Cross just to settle back into it all. But then saying that who knows, depends very much on times etc etc you all know how it goes.

Q: You're known for your huge air... any secrets on how to get that much more height out of a jump?

A: Ummmm no not really. I keep my tryes well pumped up to no less than 60 psi, I look after my board and also practice straight airs a lot. Because in freestyle I take on an opinion that it is not all about the trick its also about the take off, air time and the landing, I think that if you get all that right first then you can start adding your tricks and perfecting them that way.

Q: How big do think a mountainboard would have to be before it becomes the first mountainboard

bus?

A: 2 years, 3 months, 5 days, 15 hours, 10 seconds from the day Wiggy wins the Elite overall.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?

A: None, I own four pairs of skate shoes a pair of Vans flip flops and a pair of steel toe capped boots no shoes persay.

Q: Red or blue tyres?

A: Nither. I would always go for black, But if I had to choose red I supose.... ummmm actually maybe Blue. oh I dunno, can I have a mixture.

Q: Coffee or tea?

A: Your all going to think that this is wierd but I don't actually drink coffee or tea so hot drink wise Hot Chocolate I'm afraid.

Q: Are there any good places to eat round here?

A: Yes, Burger King, Mc Donalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, Nandos, TGI Fridays, Angus Steak House, Strada, Tesco's, Tesco's Express, Pret Manger, Ben & Jerrys, Ed's Diner, Pontis, West end Kitchen. Actually no there's not.

Thank you very much, Gary Bowman
