So the weekend began like most others for me, finish college, go home, eat, shower, go to work, get my traditional after work cheesy chips and head home. However this time I wasn’t home for the evening, I had to head up to Hale’s Superbole for Round 2 of the ATBA-UK championships! So as I left at 11pm, I set myself for a long night. The drive was long and boring as you might expect.I arrived in the early early hours of Saturday morning to drizzle, and after reading weather reports I figured it would be a long weekend.

Then came race day! And the conditions were ideal, and the new race system meant that an awesome day was had, not just for riders but spectators too! Every race was tight and too hard to call. Definitely some of my favourite racing of all time, and I tend to hate racing haha. Everyone rode so insanely well! Alex Smith stood out for me most I reckon, dominating the seniors the entire day! Amon Shaw also rode amazingly and was a surprise too considering it was his first boarderx competition and came 4th in the pro’s. But big Tom D was the main show in the finals, he had lightning reactions out the gates all day, and when it came to the Pro finals he was no different, he got out the gate first, and across the finish line first, what more needs to be said. Once racing finished and prize giving was done with, the evenings entertainment began, and one band featured Ironside’s very own, James Hirst, who covered awesome music like ben howard, and the second one somehow had us all moshing to country and folk music! Which I really don’t understand haha.

Sunday morning was good, the sun was poking its head out from behind the clouds and the freestyle was good and dry, so practice went on and people were beginning to throw down some sweet tricks. First up was the Groms, ladies and Juniors, all were throwing down 1′s 3′s and even the odd flip in the juniors, making it very hard to judge! In Jam number 2 it was the seniors masters and pro’s turn! Again everyone was throwing down trying to get on top of the podium. In the masters we saw 360′s, 180′s, 180′s on and off the jumps courtesy of Harry Jessop, it was crazy! The seniors saw some huge air, massive 3′s, backflips and frontflips! The pro’s as always was really close at the top. As the jam began all I thought I wanted from it was frontside and backside rodeo’s. So my first run was a general speed check, run number 2 was when the first attempt went surprisingly well, and about 5tries later the backflip bs360 finally came round and damn was I stoked. During this time riding went gnarly as ever, the pro’s were going crazy, James and Matt were dropping switch, doing cab 1′s, 3′s 5′s and even switch 7′s and frontflips! Emyln was going styley as always and throwing big 3′s, Tom D was going huge, Mark Adams started going for the 7 on the last kicker! Ben wanklyn went for the bs5 on the 2nd. Overall it was a sweeet day.

I think that can be said for the entire weekend as well though, the racing was amazing, and the freestyle was awesome! Absolutely cannot wait for Ironside’s now too see what crazy sheenanigans go down there! Thanks to the ATBA-UK and everyone at Hales for having us!

Bordercross

I had a feelin’ it was going to be a good weekend when there was no traffic issues across the Pennines and on the M62. Arriving midday, we were one of the first to land. Sooner or later familiar faces of friends rolled up one after the other. It was really good to be back at a comp again.

Saturday morning came, and we all woke to dry northern skies. Race on!! After a couple hours of good practice runs we were on it. Mixing up the the qualifiers was interesting, putting clumsy masters in with young athletes, changes everyone’s game! (sorry again Chloe). After a short, well needed breather,we started the knock outs. My first race was between just me and my mate Raph la Roche. Raph’s a masters legend and I love racing with him. It’s always close. After a rerun it was one a piece, so all good. My mind was on Bradley’s race though. As I waited trackside, he dropped in and took a stack on the first rollers, where he had stacked every run previously. After seeing he was ok, he wanted to keep going so I helped him on his way. With Brad still having a lot of growing to do (he’s seven), he simply wasn’t heavy enough to get over certain features. So I ended up running the whole track to help him on his way between my runs! Semi final time. Me and team mate Harry really pumped…too pumped…then over pumped…and Harry stacked it. I got a wobble and lost speed giving the final to a more chilled out Phil de Havilland-Hhall and Matt Gaydon. Brad’s in the Groms final! In the gates, staring at the roller that kept beating him up all day. He drops in…and nails em!! A huge cheer from everyone had him pumped! Between him and Harry Thomas all the way until the last berm. They both slipped out, and Harry got up quicker beating Bradley to the line. Brad was stoked, I was stoked, and very proud he took part.
Being at the finish, I got to see the outcome of the other finals. So happy to see my mate, and fellow Yorkshireman Alex Smith absolutely smashing it and taking gold back to Another World Mountainboard Centre, in Halifax! And how could I forget!! My buddy Tom Donaldson owning the pro final!! Such good riding!!
It was a great day all round. I was happy, Brad was happy. Mountainboarding makes people happy

Night Time

Sunday kicked off with eggs, bacon and sausages from ape bars and many hangovers being shaken off. After a slightly late start the freestylers donned their pads and began to practise on Superbole’s gnarly dirt jumps. They were running a lot faster than the day before and people were already going big on all 3 jumps, especially Mark Adams with his floaty 3s and 5s.

When everyone had got to grips with the speed and height of the jumps and had a play in the foam pit, a rider’s meeting was called – the first jam was to feature the groms, ladies and juniors. This year’s groms were killing it with big airs, 180s and even backside 360s on the formidably huge tabletops of Hales Superbole and it quickly became clear that these guys are going to be the future of mountainboarding. The ladies were also pushing themselves to go bigger and faster, throwing in some steezy grabs and 180s. True to form, the juniors hit the jumps with speed, style and technicality, with some awesome frontside 360s from the ever-progressing duo – Connor Tyson and Will McAuley.

The second jam played host to the seniors, masters and pros. In the masters Raph La Roche and Harry Jessop fought valiantly for 1st place but Harry won in the end with stylish grabs and a nice 360. In seniors Micky Morris got out of the foam pit and took first with his massive backside 3s. The main event had to be the pro category with everyone trying crazy tricks. Best trick of the weekend would have to go to Andy Brind with his ‘AB Flip’ – a cross between a bs corked 7 and a bs rodeo 3 – closely followed by James Wanklyn’s switch bs corked 7. Amon Shaw got a mctwist in the quarter, Mark Adams landed some stylish 540s and Tom Donaldson was getting the biggest air out of anyone with his super-tweaked grabs. In the end there were just 3 points in it, but everyone’s favourite global superstar – Matt Brind – just beat James Wanklyn to the top spot with his clean 7s, mctwists, switch 5s and bs 5s, all linked together seamlessly.

Take it Amon!

The main feature of the park is the jump over the hedge. This has a scaffolding tower roll in that is attached to some out buildings to get get speed though a small gap between some bushes and my dads much loved vegetable patch, Then you hit the kicker to air over a hedge onto a nice big landing in the field on the other side. In the field there are 3 different wooden kickers, all different styles and sizes, one of which has a slight landing. we always have a few pallets lying around that we can make different obstacles and features out of. The rails in the park are 2 long pipes, a traditional style flat rail, 2 metal rails drilled to a fence post and another smaller shorter pipe. There are a few Argos kickers that get moved around all the time and a small northshaw style drop in the middle. At the moment I am living away at college and most of the features are stuffed under the landing to keep out of the rain. However I am at home for the week before the event, so my Brother some of the East Markham crew and I are going to go mad and get everything up to standard and build as much new stuff as we can! I will post pictures on my Facebook and Twitter throughout this week to show you how it is being improved! in the middle. Antwerpen is located on the right (eastern) bank of the river Scheldt, which is linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The city has one of the largest seaports in Europe. Antwerp has long been an important city in the Low Countries both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury (1576) in the period of the Dutch Revolt. The inhabitants of Antwerp are locally nicknamed Sinjoren, after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, “lord”. It refers to the leading Spanish noblemen who ruled the city during the 17th century.

Before I close this it’s worth mentioning props to all the photographers and film makers. It wasn’t the easiest of shoots, riders were hitting different features and riding all sorts of lines. So it was very tricky for them to know were to point their cameras next!

Next round in couple of weeks at Amon’s

“Hedge jump anyone?”

No doubt you will have seen/followed/briefly-looked-at the posts we put up on the day and will know it was a draw with the spot prizes going to  Connor Tyson (Steeze Master), Emlyn Bainbridge (Ripper), Matt Brind (Line Master), and Amon Shaw (Jib Master). This of course isn’t the whole story. All of the spot prizes were hotly contested and match itself was very much a game of two halves.

Teams in Two Halves

The first half was kicked off by the dark team (Will’s team) hitting the rails and kickers on mass and then being followed in by the light Team (Amon’s Team) in a train. From then on it was pretty much the dark team leading the way in the hunt for spot prizes. More by different riders dropping and doing their thing than people looking like they picked what they thought they would be in with a chance of winning and then going for it.  It’s also worth mentioning that despite what the photo’s look like, Will’s garden is steep and even after a morning practice riders were still getting used to getting their speed right.

As the event went on it was cool to see that even though the riders were put into teams and a team prize was up for grabs, everyone either rode as a big group or sometimes split up into smaller groups and rode different features. It was also good to see riders jamming with people they don’t really see or ride with, especially the Ride The Hill boys (Alan Newman, Toney Newsome and Ryan Roberts) riding with the younger riders who spend most of their comp time at ATBA-UK events. The tunes played, the sun shone and the wind blew (could have done without that). It was more like a chilled jam with your bro’s than comp or photo shoot. Which is what #RBYJS is all about!

After about an hour had rolled by most were looking for a chill and food. Time to flip the BBQ on and do some flipping of the burger kind.

“Yah baby we’re cooking on gas!” (thanks to Roddy, Will’s dad for letting us use his grill)

Chicken, burgers, sna’gs and brief round up of who was in for a shout for what and which team looked like might win the day. Amon then
kicked the second half like a man determined to see his team in front and to lay claim to a spot prize for himself. In fact it seemed everyone lifted the game and more gap to bonks and slides, flips and quarter killing (literally). By the time we called the first round of the Remolition Backyard Jam Series to an end and looked at the notes of who done what all the spot prizes were evenly spit between both teams, so it was a draw.Ok, so what would have swung it in favour of which team?It wouldn’t have taken a lot, a few more trains or mass descents from either side or if they were feeling creative some team jibs like for example; a classic BFC reference with whole team riding past and bonking a team members board.  We’ll see what happens at Amon’s Allotment when it really comes down to deciding which team is going away with the medals. If needs be it might then we might have an #RBYJS equivalent of a penalty shoot out; a train off!!?Spot Prizes and Hard fought LinesIt goes without saying that the standard of the riding was as high as a light thing holding a helium balloon. And without a doubt the Line Master and Steeze Master prizes were the toughest to call. With at least 4 riders looking like they might be in for a shout for either of them.

Steeze Master is never going to be easy to decide. With most of the country’s best freestylers and jibbers in one place there wasn’t going to be anyone with what you could call a dodgy style  And it was a hard call with Amon, James, and Matt all looking like they might be in with an shout. In the end it came down constancy and a few styled tech jibs which saw Connor lay claim to the Steeze Master title.

Line Master was very much like the team team prize. In the first half it was Toney and Ryan who were all over the park like a bad rash. A quick mention here to Ryan with extra points for bravery for what seems to be his plan to 5-0 pick the coping of every quarter in wheelieboarding. Will’s quarter being was one of the first features Will and Connor made and to add to ghetto chic it’s made from some MDF they found #verywobbley.

So, us judges thought second half was going to be all about Ryan and Toney sorting out who really is going to claim to the Line Master prize. It all changed when Amon came out of his corner like a prize fighter looking for a KO, linking features with all his best moves. He was quickly followed by Matt Brind who seemed to be playing the waiting game, spotted what he wanted, ‘up-ed the anti’ and went for it. Unfortunately for Toney, Amon and Ryan that was the Line Master spot! Leaving his move till late in the day meant no else had the legs to keep up and he bagged the prize without question.

Jib Master also had a few riders looking like they might lay their claim to it at any point. This meant our umpire and chief note taker for the day had to keep his eyes peeled with riders likely to bust out an off the hook jib at any moment. A cheeky mention has to go Will for choosing his moment to do his 180 nose roll to 180 out of the whoop’da’whoop when we were sat near it. Another stand out jib for me was Ryan’s pivot to boardslide on banana pipe (like a mini rainbow rail).  Props also have to go to Matt Brind for grabbing the idea that if you want to do a jib but the feature doesn’t work, is in the wrong place or a line just need something else, then, if it’s not bolted down, shift it to where you want it. Matt picked up a spade, moved the kicker for the flat drain pipe, and dug a smaller one for it. Amon then took this further by ‘changing’ it into two cannon rails with an gap to boardslide ;o)

Ripper was all about consistency, inspiration and all round doing everything with style. As well as  being in the centre of the action on whatever feature or line was being sessioned, it really had to go to Emyln for looking solid and stylish all day. He got everyone involved in a hand plant comp, kicked off a world sweetcase comp, and he may have even been the one responsible for a everyone getting their tap indy on! That’s not to say no one else looked like they might win it. Will, Connor, Matt, and Toney were all in the frame at some stage.

There it is. These four winners have got to decide whether at Amon’s if they want to keep what they have got by making sure no smashes out a better jib, line, looks good or gels round the park better. Or do they just do their thing and hope their skills are enough to make sure they don’t lose out. For everyone else they know who they have to beat for what, they just decide can they and do they want to ;o)

A post match analysis wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the dives and falls and that has to go Aiden for crashing a couple of back flips off the kicker at the top of the hill.  Aiden also gets big props for heading to Will’s place at short notice and then having to ‘chip off’ early to go back to work. Much respected.

Steeze Master, for the most stylish rider, goes to Connor Tyson with his so smooth gap-nosegrind-fiveoh, and easy nose manuals.

Ripper, the best allrounder, goes to Emlyn Bainbridge for unique and different tricks like clearing the whaletail, handplants over the kicker, and cool lines using the rails, drops, and ramps.

Line Master, getter of the best line through the whole park, goes to Matt Brind for various combinations of 360 off the drop, 180 the cone, nose pivot the rainbow, pivot 360 off the drop and finish off with a frontflip off the bottom kicker.

Jib Master, the best jibber of all, goes to Amon Shaw for backflipping off the whaletail. Amon also gets a special mention for breaking the most stuff, which is what backyard jammin’ is all about.

And it’s a draw between the Light team and the Dark team, making it all to play for next time.
