ATBA-UK Series 2012: Round 2

After rain stopped play the first time around, the rescheduled Round 2 at Out To Grass turned into a fun progressive session with riders pulling surprise wins and all kinds of trickasticness. Time for our second chat with the centre manager to find out what went on.

Who are you and which comp did you host?
Ian Johnson, owner of Out To Grass Mountainboard Centre, and we hosted the rescheduled Round 2.

How did the BoarderX racing go?
We were dodging rain showers all day but we got it done. The new Grom’s Category (under 12′s) worked well. Harry Jessop pulled it out the bag to win the Masters. Chloe Chew competed in the Ladies and the Seniors (and beat her boyfriend).

What did the riders get up to after the racing?
The slip ‘n’ slide was more fun than a shower with front flips off the jump, little Harry Thomas riding on James Wanklyn’s back, Matt Wright making it all the way down on his feet, and Ed Richardson getting all stylish with the spins. Then a few tunes in the dome, a bonfire, and a night ride down The Snake to finish it off.

How did the freestyle go?
The storm clouds seemed to part like the Red Sea around us giving us a dry day with the slopestyle gradually getting faster and faster. We saw so many Juniors going upside down and Ben Searle winning with a backside seven. All the Masters were pushing themselves with Raph getting a nice three and John Cannell backflipping like he’d been doing it for ages. James Hirst went from learning 360′s the day before to attempting 540′s and James Wanklyn nailed a switch Rodeo. It was probably the most progressive session we’ve seen in a long time.

What made this comp special?
It was Team BAD’s ten year anniversary, and we had more of them in one than anyone has seen in a long time. And OTG was officially twelve years old, so it was a doubly special occasion. It was nice to see Josh Maddocks riding too.

Which rider stood out from the crowd?
It would have to be Callum King. He has only been on a board a couple of times, entered his first comp and won the Grom’s category with a really nice 180. Will Molyneux for consistently getting backflips.

What will you do now it’s over?
Have a cup of tea.
