Dylan Warren tells us about the road gap him and Slater hit in Melbourne

A few weeks back Ryan Slater and myself set out to do one of the biggest gaps of our lives. Slater has had his eye on this ridiculous size gap in the heart of Melbourne for a few years. He had tried it on a wet day with a small kicker once before but caught the knuckle of the down ramp and hurt his legs on impact pretty bad. Since then he's been real keen on hitting it again and spent probably about year nagging me to do it.

So we finally got our s*** together and made the trip out there to check it out. Como park is a cricket oval with a big park area behind it. The gap is a 2 metre high brick wall with a 1 metre railing on top of it. Which we intended to set a kicker up on to gap over the 10 metre double lane road and land on a very steep grass down ramp that leads onto the cricket pitch.

We spent our Saturday night thinking about how we were going to hit it. It took us about 2 hours to suss out how quick to hit it, how high we would need to pop and where would be the smoothest spot to land would be. After we were happy with it we got some snap shots then headed home for a few  beers to calm our nerves.

We woke up on the big day, had a coffee and headed over early to set up the ramp. The ramp was parts of our DAMAGE demo ramp and some other materials we picked up. We made the ramp really flat so that it would shoot us distance not hight. After we got the ramp sorted Slater had organised for a head camera company and Adam Z from MUNROboards to come down and I had organised for Jemma Marree and Jimmy Reynolds photography to get some pics.

So we where all set. We padded up and did some practise runs off the hill. The hill is this sketchy looking grass where we had to bomb down over dirt, ruts, sand and dodge trees. When we where happy with that all we had to do is wait for the cricketers to go on their brake.

Finally the cricketers walked off the ground on their brake. So Ryan ran up to the top of the run- in and was ready. Everyone set up their cameras and equipment. We had a crowed of about 50 people including the cricketers and the people watching the cricket. So there wasn't much pressure on Ryan for the first jump haha. When Ryan was ready he yelled out "dropping" and went for it. Due to the run- in being so sketchy you cant really afford to bail out. So when he yelled "dropping" he meant it.

COMOPARKGAP8 Slater was macking into the jump. He had made it through the sketchy jump and hit the lip and was booted 4-5 metres into the air. He sucked up his Ollie and had his eye fixed on the down ramp. He spotted the landing and got his front wheels over the down ramp with a nice landing. Everyone was cheered and Ryan was stoked!

Then it was my shot. Trying to stay pumped I ran up to the top. I had Snoop Dogg lyrics stuck in my head so it kept my mind off what I was about to do. All eyes fixed on me I yelled "dropping" heart beating, jumped into the hill. I nailed it through the run-in and hit the lip of the jumped. I popped a massive Ollie. The feeling in the air at that height was amazing! I spotted the landing and got the top of the down ramp. I was so stoked rolled down the rest of down ramp and let off a cheer.

The cricketers wanted to play again. So Ryan had to do his last jump. He put on a head camera and back pack to capture the gap from his point of view. He strapped in and ripped down the hill. He popped even bigger then before. He came down a little short on the down ramp but road it away smooth as silk.

The cricketers started to walk back on the pitch, ready to play again. I wanted to get the jump smooth so I snuck back up to the top of the hill and dropped in. Going even quicker then my first jump I hit the jump and was launched into the air. I felt weightless as I was in the middle of the Ollie. It felt rad. I put down my wheels on the green slope and landed it peeeeeerfect! I had so much speed that I ended up rolling right up to the Bowler when he was about to bowl.

Ryan and I were so stoked with how the day went. The photos came out better then we expected and same with the footage. Everyone was real impressed with the gap including the cricketers and where real interested in the boards. If anyone is ever in Melbz and want to hit it let us no. Keep an eye out in the next few weeks as Slaters putting together a video.

 Peace

 Dylan Warren.
